How to Convert a Word Document to EPUB
Upload the DOCX you already have, see exactly which chapters, front matter and back matter were detected at no charge, and then spend one $19 credit to generate a validated EPUB 3 file with a readable companion PDF. Nothing to install, and nothing charged until you approve what you saw.
Five steps from DOCX to a validated EPUB
- Save the manuscript as DOCX. Finish the book in Word or Google Docs and save or export it as a .docx file. Accept or reject all tracked changes and delete comments first.
- Upload it for the free structure check. Create an ebookconvert.pro project and upload the DOCX. No card is needed for this step.
- Review the detected structure. Check the title page, front matter, chapter list, back matter and metadata that were detected. If chapters are missing, they are usually headings that were never styled as headings in Word.
- Generate the EPUB with one credit. Approve generation and one conversion credit builds an EPUB 3 package, validates it with EPUBCheck and renders a readable companion PDF.
- Download and open it in a reader. Download both files from your dashboard and open the EPUB in Apple Books, Kindle or Kobo to confirm the contents menu, images and links before you publish.
The reason the free structure check comes first is simple: almost every disappointing ebook conversion is a structure problem, not a conversion problem. If the chapter headings in your Word file are really just larger bold paragraphs, no converter on earth can build a working table of contents from them. Seeing the detected structure before you pay is how you catch that in a minute rather than after upload to a retailer.
What your Word file becomes
Real markup from the sample book below, not an illustration.
Chapter openings carry the built-in Heading 1 style, sub-sections carry Heading 2, and body text is plain Normal. That is all the structure the converter needs.
Heading 1 A Finished Manuscript
Normal A clean Word manuscript is the
beginning of a reliable ebook
workflow...
Heading 2 What the preflight checks
Normal The structure review shows the
detected front matter, chapters
and back matter...
Each chapter becomes its own XHTML document with a stable anchor, so ereader navigation and deep links keep working.

That navigation document is what draws the contents menu in Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play Books and Kindle's EPUB import. When an ebook arrives with an empty or one-line contents menu, this file is almost always the culprit.
Seven things that break a Word to EPUB conversion
1. Headings that are only bold text
This is the single most common fault. A chapter opening typed in 18pt bold looks like a heading to you and looks like an ordinary paragraph to every piece of software that reads the file. Apply Word's built-in Heading 1 style to chapter titles and Heading 2 to sub-sections. The structure preflight will show you immediately whether your chapters were found.
2. Manual page breaks standing in for chapters
Pressing Enter until a new page starts, or inserting a page break before each chapter, gives you the right look on screen and no structure underneath. EPUB is reflowable text: the reader chooses the page size, so your page breaks have nowhere to land. Chapter divisions have to come from headings.
3. A hand-typed table of contents
A contents page typed out by hand, or one built with Word's field codes and page numbers, does not survive conversion in any useful form, because page numbers do not exist in a reflowable ebook. The EPUB navigation is generated from your headings instead. Leave your Word contents page in if you like the look of it, but the working menu comes from structure.
4. Images placed in text boxes or with text wrapping
Floating images, images anchored inside text boxes, and tightly wrapped illustrations rely on a fixed page geometry that an ebook does not have. Place images inline, on their own paragraph, and they will travel intact.
5. Fonts you expect the reader to see
Ereaders let readers pick their own typeface and size, and most of them override the book. Use fonts for emphasis and character, not for meaning, and do not build anything essential on a specific face rendering.
6. Tracked changes and comments still in the file
A manuscript with live tracked changes can convert with the edits either accepted or exposed, depending on the tooling. Accept or reject everything and delete all comments before you upload, or you risk publishing your editor's marginal notes.
7. Missing or mismatched metadata
Title, author and language belong inside the EPUB package, not just in the filename. A missing language declaration alone is enough to raise validation warnings at some retailers, and a title recorded as "Document1" will follow the file around every library it lands in.
Every EPUB is checked before you get it
EPUBCheck is the industry validator that retailers run against your file. Rather than let you find a failure at upload, ebookconvert.pro runs it as part of generation. This is the genuine report from the sample book you can download on the right.
If a book cannot be made to pass, the conversion is reported as failed and your credit is restored automatically. You are not charged for a file you cannot publish.

What a Word to EPUB conversion costs here
The structure check is free and needs no card: upload the DOCX, look at what was detected, and walk away if it is not what you expected. Generating the files costs one credit. A single credit is $19, and it produces the validated EPUB 3 and the readable companion PDF together. Authors and small presses converting several books use the 10-book pack ($139) or the 25-book pack ($237), which work out at $13.90 and $9.48 a book. There is no subscription, and credits do not expire. Full detail is on the pricing page.
Word to EPUB, answered
Can I convert a Word document to EPUB?
Yes. Upload a DOCX manuscript, review the structure that was detected, and ebookconvert.pro generates a validated EPUB 3 file plus a readable companion PDF.
Can I convert Word to EPUB for free?
The structure check is free and needs no card, so you can see exactly how your manuscript will be read before paying anything. Generating the finished EPUB and PDF uses one conversion credit.
Will my Word formatting survive the conversion?
Structural formatting survives: headings, paragraphs, italics, bold, lists, block quotes, inline images, footnotes and links. Page-bound formatting does not, because an EPUB reflows to whatever screen and type size the reader chooses. Manual page breaks, hand-typed contents pages and floating text boxes are the usual casualties.
Can I upload the EPUB to Amazon KDP?
Yes. EPUB is an accepted upload format at KDP, and the same file works at Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play Books, Barnes and Noble and the aggregators. You are not tied to one retailer.
Why do I also get a PDF?
The companion PDF is a readable copy for beta readers, review copies and your own proofing. It is not a print-ready interior with trim size and bleed, so do not send it to a printer expecting a finished book block.
Do I need to install any software?
No. The whole workflow runs in the browser, and the finished files are stored on your dashboard for download.
What if I only have an old .doc file or a PDF?
Open a .doc in Word or Google Docs and save it as .docx first. A PDF has to be turned back into a usable Word manuscript before it can become a good EPUB, which is a separate paid cleanup step, because PDFs rarely keep the structure an ebook needs.
How long does a conversion take?
Most standard reflowable manuscripts are ready in minutes rather than days. Very long or heavily illustrated books take longer.
What happens if the EPUB fails validation?
The conversion is reported as failed rather than delivered, and the credit is restored to your account automatically. You are not charged for a file you cannot publish.
